One of the three mechanisms of cell death (others are: autophagy and necrosis). Apoptosis is a programmed cell death and a natural part of the processes requiring removal of certain cells e.g. during development and defense mechanisms, where a cell can be signaled to “commit” apoptosis. Changes in the DNA methylation pattern, either hypermethylation or hypomethylation of genes involved in the apoptotic pathway, is an epigenetic mechanism by which tumor cells avoid apoptosis.
